Starting a Garden at the Music School – Kirina, Mali

Ecole de Musique de Kirina – Mali – January 2017

Thanks to the support of our donors and a collective effort in the community we were able to successfully find water in the village in 2013 and build the first well in the village equipped with a water tank and a solar pump. The village of Kirina has more than 1000 inhabitants and only had 2 wells with manual pumps for the all village until then. There are also dozens of small wells in the village but these are don’t have water during most of the dry season.

We recently created a simple distribution network of the water across the village with 10 taps located on strategic points such as the maternity, the public school, the teachers residence area and music school.  We have now started the creation of a garden at the music school o provide healthy food for the students.

The new well can provide up to 10.000 Liters of clear water per hour which is more than enough for the village needs and reasonable watering of a garden.

Beyond improving access to clean water in the village, the idea is also to empower sustainable and modern farming techniques including a reasonable use of water, ecological fertilization and soil improvements.

A big thank You to Damon Albarn who helped us to make this dream come true!

Additional information:

Most of the inhabitants of Kirina are farmers: during the dry season, which lasts 8 months per year in the area, the lack of water is a serious issue with direct consequences on the quality of the villagers’ diet. A lot of vegetables cannot be grown during the dry season because there are not enough wells to water the fields.

Beyond supporting traditional subsistence farming, the project will introduce sustainable and environmentally friendly farming techniques to the villagers, in order to increase the yield and quality of food production.

As this project will take place in the land plot of the music school, our students will be directly involved and benefit the results of it. A plot will be dedicated to the kids where every kid will own and personally take care of one plant under the direction of one experienced farmers from the village.
