Betty Kiden

Dance Teacher

Salam Music Program – Uganda

Betty was born in Kajokeji, South Sudan and has been living in the Bidi Bidi refugee settlement since 2016. Betty first learned music from her grandmother, a traditional community leader and teacher. Her passion for music started at a young age when she became a choir leader at her school and in church.

In her classes at the Salam Music Program, Betty teaches traditional South Sudanese dance and percussion. Betty also has a strong experience as a community educator, working with teenage girls on health education.

Betty believes that music brings love, unity, and peace to the youth. Music also helps children to know their traditions. “In my experience as a dance teacher, I realized that performing music from one’s culture preserves and restores cultural values and heritage,” says Betty.
