Halim is born and raised in M’hamid el Ghizlane, living in a village on the edge of the oasis where the vast expanse of the Sahara extends to Algeria and beyond. Since his early adulthood, Halim has been working, primarily with his brother Ibrahim, for the development of M’hamid and the greater region. In 2009, he and Ibrahim created the Taragalte Concept, which includes the international Festival Taragalte to celebrate the natural and cultural heritage of the Moroccan Sahara, and celebrate the shared heritages of the surrounding Saharan countries. As an extension of the festival, he and Ibrahim have joined forces with the Ségou Festival on the Niger and the Festival au Désert in Tombouctou in Mali to create the Cultural Caravan of Peace, which promotes culture, peace and tolerance through dialogue and social cohesion in the Sahara and Sahel regions. Other projects under the Taragalte Concept include the Carpet of Life, a women’s cooperative who make carpets, which helps provide income for over 70 women locally.
