The dun dun (“Dunun”) is a double headed, cylindrical drum typically with a wooden shell (although metal and fibreglass shells exist) and cowhide heads (although, some have goat-skin heads). The heads are held on with rope and often steel rings. The dundun is very popular throughout West Africa and usually accompanies the Djembé. Methods of playing the dundun vary. In Mali it is sometimes played with just one dun dun and a bell held in the hand.
