Vocal teacher
Imvula Music Program, Gugulethu South Africa
Poppie Zukiswa is a jazz vocalist born and raised in Gugulethu. Her musical journey began at the age of eight when she started singing choral music in primary school, where her passion for music and performance first took shape.
In 2014, she co-founded the band Vukuhambe, meaning “Wake up and get going,” together with drummer Artee “Da Drummer” Sokuyeka. Through Vukuhambe, Poppie continued performing, mentoring young musicians, and sharing her music with wider audiences.
Known for her commanding stage presence and soulful tone, Poppie blends jazz, African soul, and storytelling deeply rooted in the spirit of the community that raised her. Her powerful voice and energetic performances have earned her opportunities to perform at prestigious festivals, government events, hotels, live music venues, and cultural programs across South Africa.
Beyond music, Poppie is deeply committed to community upliftment. She runs a soup kitchen for children in Gugulethu township, using her platform not only to entertain but also to support and give back to those in need.
Today, Poppie continues to perform across Cape Town while also working as a part-time vocal teacher at Vukuhambe, helping nurture the next generation of singers.
