Bonakele Msumpela

Saxophone Teacher

Imvula Music Program – South Africa

Bonakele Mshumpela is a 26-year-old musician born in Cape Town, where his passion for music began at a young age. He was greatly inspired by his uncle, who was also a musician. In 2006, he started playing the trumpet, marking the beginning of his musical journey.

Over the years, Bonakele developed skills in a variety of brass instruments, including the trumpet, saxophone, French horn, trombone, and tuba. In 2011, he began studying music theory at the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra on weekends, where he completed his Grade 2 practical and theory studies.

Throughout his career, he has performed in major venues such as Artscape Theatre Centre and Baxter Theatre Centre. His musical journey also allowed him to travel across many provinces in South Africa. For Bonakele, music is part of his DNA.

After completing his studies, he worked for two years at District Six as a youth brass band facilitator. He later joined the Amy Biehl Foundation, where he worked as a brass facilitator for four years. Through workshops and ongoing experience in the music industry, he continued to grow both personally and professionally.

Today, Bonakele is passionate about sharing his knowledge and skills with the next generation of musicians through the Imvula Music Program.
