Maria Sobekwa

Visual Arts Teacher

Imvula Music Program – South Africa

Maria joined the Imvula team in 2019 and teaches students her main skills: beading and sewing. Because art in their community is inspired by Xhosa culture, she wants children to get to know their identity and roots through her teachings. She thinks music and arts education enables children to learn skills and keeps them away from social ills.

Maria grew up and went to school in Eastern Cape Town. She first learned beading through the teachings of her aunt. In the past, she has been working at an after care and teaching elderly women how to bead. She also has been self-employed, selling beaded necklaces and accessories. Her favorite artist afro-jazz musician Stompi Mavie.
