Mapuche Music Teacher

Malen is an elementary school music teacher and is currently studying to become a Music Professor. She is also part of the Mapuche rock band “Puel Kona,” which combines rock, ska, cumbia, hip hop, and other Latin genres.
Music is a living part of Mapuche culture to which Malen belongs. She was born into a family that listened to music at all times. Malen always had a strong connection to music and began taking music classes at a young age as well as participating in several musical activities in her hometown.
In her music classes, Malen teaches the Mapuche language through music and vice versa. She considers that music is a form of expression made to create and to learn to listen to others and oneself. Her aim when teaching is to provide students with the tools they need to express themselves artistically and culturally.
